Bob Fitch Obituary

Streatham, Clapham & Dulwich Post, 06/06/2001 Death of long-time SLSC member 83-year old Bob Fitch on 22 May 2001. Bob first swam at the lido at the age of 11 and apparently insisted on having a swim on the morning of his wedding! In the 1950s and 60s he and his wife Doreen ran the Bec Swimming Club for local children. In 1979 Bob led a delegation to Wandsworth Town Hall to fight the council's plans to close the lido during the winter months - thought to be a first step to total closure. The campaign was successful and Bob continued to swim at the lido all year round despite suffering a heart attack and a stroke. His wife Doreen continued to be an active member of the club in the years after his death.
