Michael Halliday (1937-2016)

South London Swimming Club member Michael Halliday (1937-2016) was a keen amateur astronomer. This photograph was taken on the occasion of the Transit of Venus on 8 June 2004 when Venus passed across the face of the sun. The previous transit had been on 6 December 1882. Michael brought his own telescope to the lido so that everyone could witness this rare celestial event. Michael designed and made the sun-dial above the café.
