Mixed Bathing

Balham & Tooting Mercury, 15/05/1931 Mixed bathing at Tooting Bathing Lake was first introduced in the summer of 1931, and then only on Sunday and Wednesday mornings after 10.00 a.m. This advance brought with it the controversial introduction of entry charges: 6d for adults and 3d for children. Opponents argued that as the pool was on common land, it should remain free to users. To improve the water quality for the women swimmers, the filtration plant and fountain were installed at this time.
