Christmas Day 1930 2/2

The race was won by South London Swimming Club member Mr H. Cowsil, originally from Lancashire. He's seen here receiving the Burton Cup from club captain William Laws. According to the local paper, a record 28 swimmers took part and Cowsil won by a touch from L. Palmer in second and L. Holloway in third. Notice that Cowsil appears to be celebrating his win with a cigarette! The Burton Cup was first competed for in 1908 and is still the prize for the men's race today.
