Dawnay Cup

Tooting & Balham Gazette, 06/10/1909 Presentation to the South London Swimming Club of the Dawnay Cup by the Mayor of Wandsworth, Archibald Dawnay, himself. It is described as a 'massive silver cup' and was for the encouragement of swimming and knowledge of life-saving. The first recipient was D. Gibb. In 1909, Dawnay was at the start of his very long mayoralty: he was unanimously elected to the post for 11 consecutive years from 1908-1919. He was head of the family steel firm of Dawnay & Sons, based in Cardiff and Battersea. He was knighted in 1918. He died on 23 April 1919 at the age of 77.
