Like a Lido!

Unidentified newspaper, 02/08/1935 The caption underneath the photograph describes the pool as being 'Like a lido' - the first known reference to Tooting Bathing Lake as a lido. London County Council, which then owned the pool, formally adopted the term on 25 June 1937. Derived from the name of the fashionable beach resort in Venice, it was already in popular use by then. A lido was regarded as more glamorous than an outdoor pool because it had a cafe and sunbathing terraces.
