Rev John Hendry Anderson

The Rev Anderson was Rector of Tooting from 1897-1913. Originally from Scotland, he had spent part of his childhood in the Surrey village of Tooting where his father, William Anderson, was a Non-Conformist minister. The Rev Anderson was also Chairman of the Works Committee of the Central Unemployed Body for London and, from 1904-05, Mayor of Wandsworth. He was the moving force behind the lido being built, primarily as a means of providing work for otherwise unemployed men. He died on 11 November 1913 at the age of 59 after falling down a flight of steps at home.
