Dawnay Rescue Champion

Balham & Tooting Mercury, 19/08/1932

The Dawnay Rescue Championship Cup 1932 was won by Derek Berry (known as Jack). Archibald Dawnay was Mayor of Wandsworth for an unequalled eleven consecutive years, from 1908-1919. He died in office on 23 April 1919. Dawnay, who lived locally, took an active interest in the South London Swimming Club from the start, particularly supporting its aim of teaching lifesaving. Derek Berry’s sister, Yvonne, later married Cyril Wood, both of whom were lifelong members of the SLSC.
