Opening Day, 28 July 1906

The Mayor of Wandsworth, Alexander Glegg, formally opened the pool on Saturday 28 July 1906. It is referred to here as ‘the Pond’ but was actually called Tooting Bathing Lake. Glegg was keen to promote swimming and later presented a trophy (a large shield) to the South London Swimming Club which has since been lost. A wealthy man who lived locally, he offered to underwrite the costs of the pool if public funds ran dry.
